NONVERBAL CUES OF MOTIVATED AND UNMOTIVATED STUDENTS

Abtract:

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to know the nonverbal cues of motivated and unmotivated students which occurs in learning process at Faculty of Letters University of Abdurachman Saleh Situbondo. Nonverbal communication is “speaking without words”, where people can misinterpret nonverbal communication that is culturally different from their own (Levine and Adelman, 1993:101). Gender also influences on nonverbal communication. Woman tent to use more facial expressions with head, hand, and arm gestures during communication then men. This study is descriptive qualitative research. The data are students’ nonverbal cues get from documenting, recording, and interviewing. Moreover, it is found that the motivated students have different nonverbal cues with unmotivated students. The motivated students tent to have the “positive” nonverbal cues and the unmotivated students tent to have “negative” cues. Hence, as the lecturers, it is important to improve nonverbal sensitivity to be better understand and communicate with the student.
