AGE AND LANGUAGE LEARNING: IS THE YOUNGER THE BETTER?

Abtract:

Abstract: The belief that the younger the students are, the better they will be in second or foreign language learning is partly grounded on observations of many people all. This leads to a phenomenon where  language children in schools start learning English at a very early age, which is mostly because their parents want them to. However, evidences show that eventhough children are sent to English course at their early age, many fail to be succesful English learners. On the other hands, other children and adult learners are succesful in learning English without receiving any formal instruction. From here we can see that age is not the key for a successful language learning. It is motivation, instead. Whatever the age of the learners are, if they are not interested in English and unmotivated to learn it, of course they cannot be successful in acquiring the language and vice versa. ELT plays an important role to trigger students’ intrinsic motivation to learn English. Since the teachers do not have any access to students’ intrinsic motivation, they should provide varied and interesting activities in the classroom to make the lesson fun, interesting, relevant, and motivating to the students.
